Essendon coach Matthew Knights has blamed his team’s terrible first half for the 43-point NAB Cup semi-final loss to Collingwood at Docklands on Friday night.
Knights said that the Bombers were below par in most areas of the game, including contested marks, defensive play and inside fifty disposals.
He added however that the team played much better in the second half, preventing the Magpies from extending their half-time lead, but made little ground on them despite the lift in intensity.
Knights singled out his team’s poor 58 per cent kicking efficiency as a major contributor to the loss, saying that to win a game of footy your kicking accuracy needs to be at least 75-80 per cent.
The positive for the Bombers is that there is huge room for improvement.
