Essendon coach Matthew Knights is holding on to hope that Matthew Lloyd will return to the fold for a last-chance win for this Saturday’s clash against Hawthorn at the MCG.

But the Bombers could enter the must-win game without speedster Alwyn Davey who seriously injured his left shoulder in Essendon’s 54-point loss to the Fremantle Dockers yesterday.

FootyGoss understands Davey is set to undergo scans today to determine the extent of the damage.

Lloyd, who has missed the past four games with a heel complaint, is said to have made good progress in his recovery over the past week.

Jobe Watson is poised to lace up against the blockbuster against Hawthorn this weekend, although he aggravated an existing ankle injury.

Knights said Watson’s straight line running was “excellent” although it was a bit of the off line and cutting that he struggled with.

He said based on his form the club was “assuming” that will come better this week.

Essendon must defeat Hawthorn to scrape into eighth spot on the AFL ladder.
