The Fevola Effect has struck Essendon who suspended key position player Michael Hurley until round four of the AFL regular season as punishment for an assault on a taxi driver.
The 19-year-old had already been suspended for the entire preseason.
Hurley faced court today in relation to five assault-related charges and is trying to avoid a criminal conviction, but deputy chief magistrate Dan Muling said the circumstances of the incident were too serious for the Bomber to go on a diversion program.
Bombers management also instructed Hurley that he must complete an alcohol counselling course and do at least 20 hours extra community work during this season.
FootyGoss understands police arrested Hurley in Richmond after a drinking session at a party following the Channel 9’s Footy Show grand final show in September last year.
Hurley was already suspended by the club from playing in the 2010 NAB Cup and Challenge competition following the altercation with the taxi driver that saw him charged with assault.
Club chief executive Ian Robson said the suspension was a significant sanction and will form one part of a broader response that would be announced soon.
He said Hurley and his lawyer were currently working through legal issues and that Essendon is working closely with the AFL on the matter.
“Michael made a serious mistake and he is extremely remorseful for his actions,†Robson said.
“He accepts that the club has imposed this sanction, and will take further action, and he will continue to fully co-operate with police and the courts.â€
Hurley was Essendon’s first pick in the 2008 national draft and has been quick to show everyone at the club why he was rated so highly.
The youngster is big, strong and composed and looks likely to become a long-term key position player if he can stay out of trouble and The Fevola Effect.
Hurley made his debut in round 1 against Port Adelaide and finished his debut season with 10 games.
He played both in the back line and in the forward line during the year showing versatility and maturity.
He kicked three goals in the club’s narrow win over St Kilda in round 21 and bettered this the following week with four goals against reigning premiers in round 22.
