WAFL Winners & Losers - Round 6

BIG WINNERS - EAST PERTH
The Royals had been disappointing in the opening rounds of the season and faced an ‘eight-point game’ against fellow strugglers East Fremantle at the Sharks’ home.

A loss could have seen them slip to the bottom of the table and lose touch with the top four, however, they broke the contest open in the second half and registered a crucial 32-point win.

The victory only moves them to seventh on the ladder but they are now just a win behind fourth-plced Peel and could move into the top four if they can repeat their performance against the in-form Swan Districts next week.

BIG LOSERS - CLAREMONT
The Tigers featured in a number of close finishes in 2007 and nothing has changed this season - except that they are finishing up on the wrong side of the ledger in 2008.

Claremont’s eight-point loss to South Fremantle follows single-figure defeats at the hands of Swan Districts and Peel and leaves last season’s Minor Premiers one game adrift of the top four with a bye to come next round.

STAR OF THE ROUND - ANDREW MERRINGTON (EP)
All eyes were on Chris Tarrant in the East Perth forward line, however it was another key forward in Andrew Merrington who was the game breaker against East Fremantle.

After playing in the ruck for much of last week’s contest with South Fremantle, the veteran produced a best on ground performance to help his Royals shake the Sharks, finishing with seven majors.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON...IAN RICHARDSON (C)
Claremont’s Colts team of 2006 featured eight players who were to be drafted in the up-coming AFL draft, but it was another impressive youngster in Ian Richardson who was awarded the Jack Clarke Medal for the best and fairest player in the Colts competition.

After being unable to break into the Tigers’ strong League line-up last season, Richardson has burst onto the scene this season as a dynamic forward and after kicking seven goals against Peel last week he followed up with another four this week opposed to South Fremantle.

Richardson will be looking to continue his early season form in the hope of joining former Colts team mates such as Josh Hill and Nathan Krakouer in a belated crack at AFL football.
