FORMER AFL star Andrew Lovett will make his long awaited return to football this weekend since his last appearance for Essendon in September last year.
Lovett has been named on the interchange bench for East Perth to take on Peel Thunder at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Sunday, after he was cleared to re-register with the Royals this week.
The 27 year-old joined his new teammates at a training session last month, looking in peak physical fitness, despite his long absence from the game.
He played 88 games for the Bombers but was off-loaded to St Kilda last year for pick No.16 in the national draft after a wave of off-field breaches at Essendon.
For now, the new Royals recruit will remain on St Kilda’s list until the end of the season, after he was given approval to play in state ranks by both the AFL and the Saints.
Royals coach Tony Micale said the club and the players were rapt to have Lovett back at the club that he launched his career from in 2003.
“He’s committed, he understands what the requirements are and he still has the enthusiasm to play the game,” Micale said.
“It’s great for us to be able to give him this opportunity to go out and show his football skills again.”
