The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has confirmed East Perth Football Club player Dean Cadwallader has returned a positive test for nandrolone.
An ASADA spokesperson said both the “A†and “B†samples taken of Cadwallader have returned a positive result the anabolic steroid.
FootyGoss understands that Cadwallader was provisionally suspended from playing WAFL pending the outcome of the matter.
“ASADA is continuing to handle results management in this matter in accordance with the National Anti-Doping scheme and WAFL Anti-Doping Code.,†the spokesperson said.
Listed as an S1 Anabolic Agent on the 2010 World Anti-Doping Code Prohibited List, nandrolone is prohibited during the season and during the off-season.
The positive effects of the drug include muscle growth, appetite stimulation and increased red blood cell production and bone density.
Clinical studies have shown it to be effective in treating anaemia, osteoporosis and some forms of neoplasia including breast cancer, and also acts as a progestin-based contraceptive.
For these reasons, in the United States nandrolone received FDA approval in 1983.
But anabolic steroids help the body produce more hormones than normal and this can cause damage to the body’s major organs, especially the liver.
They can also cause heart attacks by expanding the main cardiac muscle and can also increase the risk of cancer.
“Under the World Anti-Doping Code, athletes are ultimately responsible for any substance found in their body or in their possession. Ignorance is no excuse,†the ASADA spokesperson added.
“In addition to a doping athlete losing their reputation and career, it is important to remember that anabolic steroids like nandrolone are harmful to an athlete’s health.â€
