Former East Fremantle Football Club full-forward Paul Nicholls has died after a long battle with cancer.

Nicholls, who kicked four goals in the 1974 premiership enabling the Sharks to claim victory over Perth, was also a WA all-rounder who won three Sheffield Shield titles and claimed eight wickets during his debut against South Australian in 1971-72.

Born Paul Allen Nicholls on November 10, 1946 in East Fremantle, the robust sportsman went on to have a successful legal career and worked as a before he died in on January 17.

Nicholls was known as a ferocious competitor for the footy and complemented his tenacity with what could only be described as a superb mark.

Always on the look out for action on the field, Nicholls could dictate the flow of the game, meticulously executing plays when he had possession of the ball.

Nicholls played 19 first class and two one-day matches for WA between the 1971-72 and 1978-79 seasons.

He was a right-hand bat and off-spin bowler and took eight on his debut against South Australia at the Adelaide Oval, the second best debut ever.

Nicholls won the 1972-73 premiership with Claremont-Cottesloe during two seasons there and also played one season at South Perth.

Hundreds of people turned out to the footy legend’s funeral at Karrakatta Cemetery on January 22.
