East Fremantle football manager Damien Gaspar stoked the WAFL derby fire late last week.

Talking about the Sharks playing in front of some former greats, Gaspar put the pressure on and said the boys in blue and white had a lot at stake against their arch rivals.

On Monday, the Sharks came out biting and in a nail-biting finish, pulled off a stunning one point Foundation Day derby victory, 18.7 (115) to 17.12 (114) over South Fremantle at East Fremantle Oval.

At Claremont Oval, Subiaco proved too strong for Claremont winning, 17.14 (116) to 11.12 (78).

But the game to watch, which drew a crowd hovering at 12,000, was the East versus South showdown.

The Sharks were behind until the 15-minute mark of the fourth quarter, but managed to hold on to win by one behind even though the Bulldogs led by more than 30 points during the first half.

South Fremantle launched an inspiring comeback twice to get within one point in the clutch of the game, but East Fremantle showed tenacity and with all might, held on.

The Bulldogs lost former Docker Peter Bell early in the game with a hamstring injury, adding to the team’s woes of not having firebrand Jeff Farmer.

Sharks captain Kasey Green was also off early with a knee injury much to the dismay of his team.

Yet Daniel Dalby rose to the occasion for East Fremantle, notching up a bevy of possessions, supported by Matt Spangher, Leith Teakle and Leigh Conway.

For South Fremantle, Ray Smithers, Craig White, Kris Miller and Nathan Phillips all contributed with solid performances.

Prior to the derby, the Sharks suffered four disappointing losses since winning the opening four games of the season.

Yet coach Shane Woewodin was not daunted by an in-form Bulldogs squad, challenging his young Sharks to rise to the Foundation Day occasion.

The Foundation Day derby has always been a must-see WAFL event with the last meeting at East Fremantle Oval in 2007 getting almost 10,000 fans turn up.
