Sharks, Bulldogs in search of early edge

Bitter rivals East Fremantle and South Fremantle will be looking to bounce back, after both teams suffered first round defeats, when they meet at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

The Sharks were stunned by an enthusiastic Perth side, crashing to a 48-point loss, while the Bulldogs went down to premiership favourites Subiaco in the season opener by 40 points.

Last week East Fremantle had the services of AFL-listed youngsters Jamie McNamara, Chris Masten, Rhys Palmer, Matt Spangher and Calib Mourish, all of whom featured in the Sharks’ best players, but they couldn’t match the Demons who were fired up and ready for Round 1.

With the likes of Masten and Palmer set to make their AFL debut this week, East Fremantle coach, Shane Woewodin will be looking for more from his experienced players and will turn to Michael Griffiths, Luke Weller, Leith Teakle and former Bulldog, Theo Adams to lead the way.

Likewise, some of the older Bulldogs such as James Walker and Keren Ugle appeared short of a gallop last week and will be expected to find form over the coming weeks.

South Fremantle uncovered Simon O’Keefe last week against the Lions and the new recruit showed that he had attributes that should strengthen the Bulldogs this season. Add to the mix Andrew Siegert and Scott Thornton and the Bulldogs side appears stronger for this clash.

The Bulldogs should enter the match as slight favourites, however, East Fremantle knocked off their arch-rivals twice last season and will be hoping a clash with the old enemy can kick-start their 2008 season.
