WAFL Round 8 Preview - AFL Stars in Action
Posted May 9, 2008 - 9:48 AM
With the AFL having a bye a number of stars are appearing for their WAFL sides in Round 8 this weekend.
CLAREMONT v PERTH @ CLAREMONT OVAL
Claremont welcome back key forward, Chad Jones to strengthen their attack while Perth are bolstered by the inclusion of Mark Johnson, Chris Mayne, Steven Armstrong and Sam Butler, who makes yet another come back from persistent hamstring problems.
Both teams have plenty to play for, as the Tigers search for a much needed victory after a few narrow defeats, and the Demons aim to back up their comprehensive win over South Fremantle last weekend.
Perth gave Claremont some headaches last season but failed to take home the four points. With six AFL-listed players in their line-up and former AFL players, Troy Cook and Ross Young in oustanding form, the Demons will never have a better chance to knock off last year’s Minor Premiers.
Prediction - Demons by 9 points
SUBIACO v EAST PERTH @ SUBIACO OVAL
WAFL football returns to Subiaco Oval this Saturday when the Lions host the Royals in a match that pays tribute to the first ever match played at the venue.
Subiaco are coming off a thumping win over Peel, but will be without both Daniel Chick and Phil Read, who are both suspended.
East Perth held a four goal lead in the last quarter against Swan Districts but managed to let it slip and will be desperate to atone.
This time last season it was the Royals who ended the reigning premiers’ unbeaten run, but it is hard to imagine that they could repeat the dose this week.
Prediction - Lions by 54 points
SWAN DISTRICTS v EAST FREMANTLE @ STEEL BLUE OVAL
East Fremantle may be winless after seven rounds but they would fancy their chances against Swan Districts this Saturday.
The Sharks team is approaching full strength and Swans will be without WA Under 18’s stars, Nicholas Naitanui and Chris Yarran, as they begin their preparations for the National Championships.
It is second playing last on the ladder but the final margin could well be much closer than ladder positions suggest.
Prediction - Swans by 17 points
PEEL v WEST PERTH @ RUSHTON PARK
The Thunder will face a new challenge this week; entering a match as clear favourites.
Despite Peel’s promising start to the season there would be some major question marks hanging over them following the hiding they copped from Subiaco last round.
Meanwhile, the Falcons chalked up their second win last week when they held out a fast-finishing East Fremantle, and they would be quietly confident of sneaking a victory in this clash.
The Thunder need to win to recover some of the momentum lost last week.
Prediction - Thunder by 16 points
