Tigers on the up

CLAREMONT is showing vast signs of improvement heading into the 2010 season, on the back of some impressive performances in their WAFL Variety Challenge games.

After thumping Swan Districts by 101-points the week before, the Tigers followed up by recording a 14-point win over Perth at Claremont Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers led all the way in the 11.9 (75) to 9.7 (61) win, and were buoyed by the performances of some of their emerging stars, including West Coast rookie Lewis Stevenson, ruckman Tom Derickx and winger Joel Coyne.

Stevenson (20) racked up 11 possessions in the first half, and was good across the half-back flank, setting up many chances with his run and carry from defence.

Tom Derickx may soon make his WAFL debut after putting in a solid performance over the weekend. The 200cm ruckman could provide support to Andrew Ruck, following the departure Michael Warren.

Joel Coyne had 20 touches on the wing, and set up a nice goal in the third quarter with a few running bounces, while Jesse Laurie also impressed along the half-back flank, finishing with six marks, nine kicks and ten handballs.

Former Sydney Swan Ryan Brabazon also featured in the win, and was among Claremont’s best, alongside Stevenson and Coyne.

The 23-year-old was drafted by Sydney at pick No.59 in 2005 after an outstanding junior career as a lively midfielder.
Brabazon is looking for a second chance to rebuild his football career with Claremont, after having played just three games for the Swans, before being de-listed at the end of 2009.
