Richardson awarded Simpson Medal

Claremont goalsneak Ian Richardson has been awarded the Simpson Medal for his best-on-ground display for Western Australia in their 73-point victory over Queensland in Townsville today.
Richardson, who has been in sparkling touch in his first ten league matches for the Tigers, kicked five goals and was presented with the medal at an after-match function tonight.
The award continues a remarkable rise to prominance for the small forward.
Today’s match was the first appearance in WA colours for Richardson after he was overlooked for state junior representative teams.
He won the Jack Clarke Medal for the best and fairest player in the WAFL Colts competition in 2006 before his dreams of player AFL football were dealt a blow when he missed selection in the draft.
2007 was also frustrating for Richardson as he failed to break into Claremont’s strong league team despite strong form in the reserves.
However, after being given an opportunity in the first match of this season Richardson has not looked back, kicking 35 goals in the first ten rounds, including two seven-goal hauls, and now claiming the Simpson Medal in WA’s big win today.
