The Western Bulldogs have cut ties with veteran Jason Akermanis, who joined the club in 2007.
The Bulldogs cited a number of off-field incidents in the past 18 months – not all of them were made public – as the key reason behind the sacking.
Bulldogs president David Smorgon said today Akermanis had also failed to keep private club issues in-house.
Earlier this year, Akermanis wrote a controversial column for the Herald Sun on gay footballers. He then reportedly misled the Dogs by telling the hierarchy the article was changed before publication.
The article led to a stint in the VFL with Williamstown, and it was thought Akermanis would return to senior action in the next fortnight.
But the three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player will not be a part of the Dogs’ finals campaign this year. His contract will be paid out in full.
