Western Bulldogs officials have met with controversial AFL player Jason Akermanis over his playing future with the club.
Akermanis may be sanctioned as early as today by the Western Bulldogs after the veteran revealed he was entirely responsible for his recent column that suggested gay footballers should stay in the closet.
Last week Aker said that his article had been changed.
It’s understood the club has deferred a decision on the ‘human headline’s’ future until today after officials met with Akermanis at Whitten Oval on Monday where they declined to comment on the outcome of the discussions.
‘Dogs general manager of football James Fantasia told afl.com.au on Friday that the club was “not ruling anything out†in terms of the sanctions that will be imposed on the 2001 Brownlow medallist.
“We just want to get all the circumstances together and have a closer look as a club. Then we’ll work out how we’re going to deal with it,†he said at the time.
Fantasia said he was unsure of the players’ attitude towards Aker and what had transpired since last Thursday’s story, but said they could be asked for their opinions when deciding on how to punish Akermanis.
“The players themselves don’t worry about those issues from that point of view,†he added.
“That’s up to us to deal with and they’ll have some input at some time, but not right now.â€
AFL head honcho Andrew Demetriou said the Bulldogs were let down by Akermanis, which has vindicated the Herald Sun were correct in their assertion they didn’t change anything in the article.
The club last Thursday issued a statement saying Akermanis acknowledged the piece was a fair and accurate portrayal of his views on the subject.
The statement said Akermanis had apologised to the newspaper and his club for the suggestion that he did not approve the published column.
