The Herald Sun reports AFL players should give the go-ahead for year-round drugs testing, according to Brisbane Lions skipper Michael Voss.
Voss said it would restore the public's faith in the AFL and help rebuild the game's image. Voss, a member of the AFL Players Association executive, said the AFL's image had taken a hammering this year and players needed to show the football world they were serious about the welfare of the game, on and off the field. ``I think we should fall into line with all major sports,'' he said. ``Football codes in general have taken a hammering and we, as players, have to take responsibility about how it is portrayed.
``Being tested on your holidays would be harsh, but we are professional athletes and need to look at it from that point of view.''
The AFL is proposing a drugs policy that would allow testing all year round, not just during pre-season training and the season proper. One of the reasons is the growing use of drugs such as ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana.
