The Brisbane Lions has encountered The Fevola Effect.
Last weekend, a lifetime Western Bulldogs supporter spent two days in a police watchhouse after throwing a beer over the ubiquitous controversial AFL so-called star “Big Bad†Brendan Fevola.
Reports have named him as 56-yar-old ‘bulldog’ Campbell Paul Davey.
FootyGoss understands he appeared briefly in Brisbane Magistrates’ Court yesterday over the incident, where it is alleged that while Fev was celebrating a Lions goal he ran towards the boundary fence behind the goal posts and verbally abused opposition fans.
The Court was told that Davey had attended more than 2000 AFL games and was in the Gabba crowd in the Bulldogs’ 22-point loss to the Brisbane.
While Fevola, who is alleged to have asked underworld figures for loans to pay off mounting gambling debts, overzealously celebrated the goal, other Lions players retired towards the centre of the field.
It is when he ventured to the boundary fence that Davey allegedly threw a small amount of beer on Fev, who then directed police and security officials to who he thought threw the beer.
Davey was arrested and spent the weekend since his arrest in the watchhouse and missed his flight home.
Reports this week said the ‘Dods supported pleaded guilty to interfering with a person engaged in a sporting event, but Magistrate Tina Previtera noted two nights in custody was more than sufficient penalty and Davey was released from custody immediately.
However, Brisbane coach Michael wants an AFL into the beer incident.
Voss, who has already had to deal with Fevola’s photo scandal with Bingle, says the AFL should consider banning spectators involved in such behaviour from attending matches.
“Spectators can’t touch players and players can’t touch spectators, it’s pretty clear,” he said.
“I don’t think you can put up with that sort of behaviour.
“The AFL has a strong stance about that and if the AFL haven’t got involved they should, because you can’t have that and it should be eliminated.
“It’s one of the attractions of our game, that we can go there and enjoy football without idiots carrying on.”
Outside the court, Davey said Fev started abusing the Bulldogs’ supporters after Jonathan Brown had kicked a goal and instead of running back down the ground he ran over and started “gobbing off at the Western Bulldogs (fans)â€.
“I shouldn’t have done what I did, I accept that,” he said, adding that he cannot remember what was said, but some fans were having a go at the controversial Big Bad Fev about his admitted gambling addiction.
Davey said he got a lot of beer tipped over him by Brisbane supporters, but the police didn’t seem to worry about that.
He also declined to apologise to Fevola.
“He gobbed off at me and I threw some beer at him, I think that’s a fair exchange,” he said.
“I don’t talk to idiots.”
Western Bulldogs head honcho Campbell Rose, in a club statement, said the club expects more from its fans.
“Irrespective of any provocation by players we do not condone this behaviour,” he said.
“This incident is not befitting nor reflective of the vast majority of Bulldogs members.
“This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we are happy to see that the offender was quickly apprehended.”
Meanwhile, as the Lions suffer from the inevitable The Fevola Effect, mystery still surrounds Simon Black’s calf injury.
Voss said it is no closer to being solved, claiming he is not sure when the Brownlow medallist will return to the field.
He offered no guarantees to key players Mitch Clark and Ash McGrath ahead of the Lions’ clash with Melbourne on Saturday night, despite both completing their suspension.
Voss seemed at a loss as to when Black would return, although he was named for the Lions’ last round clash with the Western Bulldogs.
Brisbane has won the opening four games of the season for the first time since 2002 - a premiership year for the team.
