AFL Northern Territory wishes to advise that the Imalu Tigers have won the opportunity to play at the M.C.G. after winning the Norforce Community Division of the 2008 Defence Jobs AFL Carnival. While 18 teams competed in three divisions (Navy N.T.F.L., Norforce Community, RAAF Women’s), it was the chance to play at the M.C.G. that enticed 8 communities from all four corners of the Territory.
Having travelled to Darwin to compete in the three day Carnival, the side from Melville Island will now travel to Melbourne, to play a match at the M.C.G. This follows Santa Teresa’s match in May this year, when they played the Fitzroy All-Stars in the curtain raiser of the AFL’s Dreamtime at the G match.
In a pulsating Grand Final against last year’s champions Santa Teresa, the Tigers - who won the 2007/8 Tiwi Islands Football League - ran away deserved victors 7.7 (49) to 1.3.6 (33).
The side, unbeaten in all 7 games, now eagerly await the scheduling of their match as the AFL finalizes the fixture for the 2009 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
In the two other Divisions, Nightcliff were impressive in easily accounting for a young St. Mary’s side, to take out the Navy N.T.F.L. Division. In the RAAF Women’s Division, Waratah exacted revenge on St. Mary’s, beating last year’s champions in a replay of the 2007 Grand Final.
