Former Saints coach remembers ground invasion

Former Saints coach Grant Thomas has said that the traditional ground invasion after Fraser Gehrig’s 100 goal in 2004 played a big part in preventing St Kilda gain a Grand final berth.
The Saints were leading Port Adelaide by 14 points and looked well in control at AAMI Stadium in the prelimanary final.
Fraser Gehrig then booted his 100th of the season ten minutes into the first term resulting in hundreds of Saints fans running onto the pitch to celebrate with him. The big man was forced from the ground for almost three minutes and when play continued the Saints had lost their momentum.
Port Adelaide kicked the next four goals and made the most of the lucky break.
Thomas said if it was not for that event, the Saints might have been Grand finalists.
