THE 2009 NAB AFL Draft has seen 13 WAFL stars selected to compete in the league’s elite level next season, with 10 of those picked inside the top 35.
It came as no surprise that Peel Thunder’s Anthony Morabito was Fremantle’s no.4 pick, while West Coast went with East Fremantle defender Brad Sheppard with their no.7 pick.
The Dockers also secured two more WA stars in Nathan Fyfe (Claremont) and Joel Houghton (Perth) at no.20 and 36, while West Coast nabbed Gerrick Weedon (Claremont) and Koby Stevens with their second round picks.
The Claremont Football Club was well represented, with four players being selected inside the top 35, including pick no.26 Travis Colyer (Essendon) and pick no.32 Nicholas Winmar (St.Kilda). The pair will join Fyfe and Weedon as successful Tigers draftees.
Swan Districts rising star Lewis Jetta (no.14), who seemed likely to be snapped up by West Coast with their first round pick was instead recruited by the
Sydney Swans. Jetta will be joined by leading Subiaco goal-scorer Trent Dennis-Lane, who was also taken by the Swans at pick no.55.
Other WAFL notables include East Fremantle’s Kane Lucas, who will head to the Blues at pick no.12, while Aaron Black (no.25) will join Brad Scott at North Melbourne, as Mitch Duncan (East Perth) heads to the Cattery to join Geelong next season.
Meanwhile, former Saint Luke Ball finally got his wish, after Collingwood handed him a lifeline with their no.30 pick, and Brisbane secured the services of former St.Kilda defender Matt Maguire with one of the final picks in the draft at no. 91.
