Trade Week: Blow by Blow

Posted Oct 12, 2009 - 0:21 AM

Adelaide Crows

W: None.
L: None.
Draft picks: 13, 29, 45, 61, 77

The only team to not trade during trade week

Brisbane Lions

W: Brendon Fevola (Carlton), Xavier Clarke (St Kilda), Brent Staker (West Coast), Amon Buchanan (Sydney), Andrew Raines (Richmond), Pick 27 (Carlton), Pick 47 (Sydney)

L: Lachie Henderson (Carlton), Bradd Dalziell (West Coast), Pick 12 (Carlton), Pick 28 (Sydney), Pick 39 (Sydney), Pick 44 (Richmond), Pick 60 (St Kilda).
Draft picks: 27, 47, 76.

The big winners at the 2009 trade week.  The Lions entered deals with Richmond and St.Kilda, a three-way deal with West Coast and Sydney and the deal of the century with Carlton. From that they secured the services of a capable Richmond defender, a Sydney premiership small forward, a half-back Saint, and a reigning Coleman Medallist.

Carlton

W: Lachie Henderson (Brisbane), Brock McLean (Melbourne), Pick 12 (Brisbane).
L: Brendon Fevola (Brisbane), Pick 11 (Melbourne), Pick 27 (Brisbane).
Draft picks: 12, 43, 59, 75.

Hands down the biggest loser at trade week. Carlton lost 100kg of full forward, and probably a decent chunk of next year’s memberships.

Collingwood

W: Darren Jolly (Sydney).
L: Pick 14 (Sydney), Pick 46 (Sydney).
Draft picks: 30, 62, 78.

Didn’t do much, but did enough to secure a premier ruckman. Should have also secured Luke Ball as well.

Essendon

W: Mark Williams (Hawthorn), Pick 24 (Port Adelaide), Pick 33 (Geelong).
L: Jay Nash (Port Adelaide), Andrew Lovett (St Kilda), Pick 16 (Port Adelaide), Pick 42 (Geelong).
Draft picks: 10, 24, 26, 33, 74.

Will have four picks inside top 33, and will gain a Hawks premiership forward

Fremantle

W: Pick 48 (St Kilda), Pick 49 (Geelong).
L: Marcus Drum (Geelong), Brett Peake (St Kilda).
Draft picks: 4, 20, 36, 48, 49, 52, 68.

Had to off-load Peake and Drum, in exchange for consecutive picks in third round.

Geelong

W: Marcus Drum (Fremantle), Pick 28 (Sydney), Pick 40 (Port Adelaide), Pick 42 (Essendon), Pick 56 (Port Adelaide).
L: Shane Mumford (Sydney), Pick 33 (Essendon), Pick 49 (Fremantle), Pick 97 (Port Adelaide).
Draft picks: 17, 28, 40, 42, 56, 65, 81.

Despite salary cap issues, the Cats managed to keep its premiership squad. Lost big Mumford, but gained pick 28 for their troubles.

Hawthorn

W: Shaun Burgoyne (Port Adelaide), Josh Gibson (North Melbourne), Pick 39 (Sydney), Pick 46 (Sydney), Pick 69 (North Melbourne), Pick 70 (Sydney).
L: Mark Williams (Essendon), Josh Kennedy (Sydney), Ben McGlynn (Sydney), Pick 9 (Port Adelaide), Pick 25 (North Melbourne), Pick 41 (North Melbourne).
Draft picks: 39, 46, 57, 58, 69, 70, 73.

Clarkson set his sights on Shaun Burgoyne and didn’t rest until he got it. Josh Gibson isn’t a key defender but will become critical. Campbell Brown was one premiership player off limits, but Mark Williams wasn’t… fancy that.

Melbourne Demons

W: Pick 11 (Carlton).
L: Brock McLean (Carlton).
Draft picks: 1, 2, 11, 18, 34, 50, 66.
Four picks inside top 20

Got a great deal for Brock McLean, but the focus is on November 26, with four top-20 picks to look forward to.

North Melbourne

W: Pick 25 (Hawthorn), Pick 41 (Hawthorn)
L: Josh Gibson (Hawthorn), Pick 69 (Hawthorn)
Draft picks: 5, 21, 25, 37, 41, 53.

Josh Gibson said he wanted out, and got his wish on the first morning of trade week. Fans would have expected more trade targets for a side that finished in the bottom half of the ladder.

Port Adelaide

W: Jay Schultz (Richmond), Jay Nash (Essendon), Pick 9 (Hawthorn), Pick 16 (Essendon), Pick 97 (Geelong).
L: Mitch Farmer (Richmond), Shaun Burgoyne (Hawthorn), Pick 24 (Port Adelaide), Pick 40 (Geelong), Pick 56 (Geelong), Pick 72 (Richmond).
Draft picks: 8, 9, 16.

The Shaun Burgoyne saga was finally resolved, and they did well to squeeze a top-10 pick out of the Hawks. With 3 picks inside the top 20, fans may overlook Port’s decision to recruit Nash and Schulz

Richmond

W: Mitch Farmer (Port Adelaide), Pick 44 (Brisbane), Pick 72 (Port Adelaide).
L: Jay Schulz (Port Adelaide), Andrew Raines (Brisbane).
Draft picks: 3, 19, 35, 44, 51, 67, 72.

In a deal that was settled long before the official exchange period began, running defender Andrew Raines was sent to the Brisbane Lions in the second completed deal of trade week. Richmond received the Lions’ third round selection (No.44) in return. Later in the week, the Tigers sent South Australian big man Jay Schulz to Port Adelaide in exchange for defender Mitch Farmer and pick No.72.

St Kilda

W: Brett Peake (Fremantle), Andrew Lovett (Essendon), Pick 60 (Brisbane).
L: Xavier Clarke (Brisbane), Pick 16 (Essendon), Pick 48 (Fremantle).
Draft picks: 32, 60, 64, 80.

The Saints would be disappointed not to get anything out of a Luke Ball trade, but the inclusion of Andrew Lovett softens the blow.

Sydney Swans

W: Josh Kennedy (Hawthorn), Ben McGlynn (Hawthorn), Shane Mumford (Geelong), Mark Seaby (West Coast), Pick 14 (Collingwood), Pick 55 (West Coast).

L: Pick 22 (West Coast), Pick 28 (Geelong), Pick 39 (Hawthorn), Pick 46 (Hawthorn), Pick 47 (Brisbane), Pick 70 (Hawthorn), Pick 118 (West Coast), Darren Jolly (Collingwood), Barry Hall (Western Bulldogs), Amon Buchanan (Brisbane).

Draft picks: 6, 14, 38, 54, 55.

The inclusion of Ben McGlynn and Josh Kennedy is a bonus for the Swans.  The signings of Shane Mumford and Mark Seaby give their ruck stocks a much-needed boost, especially after losing Darren Jolly to Collingwood.

West Coast

W: Bradd Dalziell (Brisbane), Pick 22 (Sydney), Pick 118 (Sydney).
L: Brent Staker (Brisbane), Mark Seaby (Sydney), Pick 39 (Brisbane), Pick 55 (Sydney)
Draft picks: 7, 22, 23, 71, 87.

Completed a complex three way deal, which saw promising midfielder Bradd Dalziell head home, after a promising start with Brisbane.

Western Bulldogs

W: Barry Hall (Western Bulldogs).
L: Pick 47 (Sydney).
Draft picks: 15, 31, 63, 79

Premiership drought looks set to end, as Dogs choose one bad boy over another. With the tall forward void filled, they should finish top two, if Eade can keep the B-dog on his leash.
