Top umpire unsure about new rules

The AFL’s top umpire from the 2008 season, Brett Rosebury, says that all the umpires are annoyed at still being unsure as to which rules they will have to enforce and interpret, with only a few weeks until the start of the season to go.

The controversial new rushed behind rule that has been trialed during the pre-season, along with two other new rules are yet to be set in concrete for the regular home and away season, with the AFL Commission set to meet later this week to make a decision.

Rosebury said it would be a relief if he and his fellow umpires knew exactly what the rules for the up and coming season are going to be. Adding there is quite a bit of frustration and anxiety.

So far, there is evidence that the AFL will bring in the new rushed behind rule which involves a free kick been awarded against any player that deliberately rushes a behind.

Rosebury doesn’t seem to be a fan of the rule, saying that it requires a fair bit of interpretation that will vary from umpire to umpire.
