EAST Fremantle defender Kyle Hardingham is off to Windy Hill after being drafted to Essendon at yesterday’s NAB AFL pre-season draft.

The 21-year-old had a terrific season, which saw him not only represent WA in State football, but also claim the Lynn Medal, as his club’s best and fairest player.

Hardingham was taken at pick no. 7 by the Bombers, and will join the club as a mature age recruit, after having played 48 League games at WAFL level.

East Fremantle Coach Shane Woewodin said Hardingham had worked hard with the Sharks, and now deserved the opportunity to play at elite level.

“It’s terrific for him to get picked up,” he said.

“He has put in an enormous amount of work and effort this year and it’s great to see all that hard work being rewarded.

Woewoedin also said it was a credit to the local competition to have a considerable group of players being drafted as rookies.

Peel midfielder Ben Howlett (21) will join Hardingham at Essendon, while both Lewis Broome and Ashton Hams (23) were selected in the AFL Rookie Draft by West Coast.

“It’s also tremendous for the WAFL, with a number of mature age guys being selected ... it goes to show the strength of the competition.”

Former Sharks Football Manager Kim Barrett said Hardingham had worked tirelessly in improving his fitness and skills and also said he was pleased to see him rewarded.

Incredibly, Hardingham has now become the 11th player to be drafted from East Fremantle’s 2005 Colts team.
