Adelaide Crows defender Phil Davis has been named the AFL’s Rising Star nominee for round 16.
Davis, who was on the raw end of an Aaron Sandilands bump earlier this month, has played 12 games this year since making his debut in round four.
The 19-year-old doesn’t recall being taken from the ground on a stretcher during the club’s victory over Fremantle in round 11.
Who would after running into a mounting of a man like Sandilands?
But as various internet reports suggest, it’s a moment coach Neil Craig and 35,000 Crows fans who saw the incident will remember for a very, very long time.
Craig set the 19-year-old defender on a tough mission last Friday night, placing him against 100kg Geelong forward Cameron Mooney.
This is despite the youngster playing just 11 AFL games to date.
But with the help of Davis, who kept Mooney to a mere 9 possessions and two goals, the Crows won by 11-points.
Adelaide as a result kept its season alive, and Davis appropriately got the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for round 16.
“It was a pretty good experience,†Davis told afl.com.au.
“He’s [Mooney] played in 200-plus games and in three premierships, so it was a good learning experience.â€
