A devastating second quarter by Adelaide set up a 32 point victory over fierce rivals Port Adelaide in Derby 15 at AAMI Stadium tonight.
The final score saw the Crows 17.17.119 defeat Port Adelaide 13.9.87.
In an intense first quarter, Warren Tredrea kicked three goals for Port, all from on the ground contests and a three goal spree in four minutes gave the Power a small lead at the quarter time break.
Tredrea opened the second quarter with his fourth goal for the night but a seven consecutive goal blitz to Adelaide, including three majors to Graham Johncock, saw the match swing the Crows way. Before the half time siren, Johncock added his fourth goal for the quarter to give Adelaide a 27 point lead at the main break.
Adelaide were applying constant pressure on Port, and Port turnovers, mistakes and errant kicks were proving costly.
The start of the third quarter saw Adelaide miss a number of easy goal scoring opportunities, while Brett Ebert kicked the first goal of the term for Port Adelaide to give them some hope of clawing their way back into the match.
Adelaide were dominating across the centre line and had options a plenty up forward, while Port were having difficulty clearing out of their backline, and were facing stiff opposition in their forward line, with the Adelaide defenders repelling attacking moves with relevant ease.
By three quarter time, Adelaide had stretched the margin to 37 points and while Port applied pressure on the scoreboard in the last term with back-to-back goals, a steadying goal by Luke Jericho saw the Crows home to cause an astonishing upset.
The victory would be extremely satisfying for Adelaide as they had lost the previous seven showdowns.
Adelaide finished the night with nine goalkickers, including Graham Johncock with four goals, and Wayne Carey and Ken McGregor with three each. Warren Tredrea was outstanding at full forward finishing the night with seven goals, while the only other multiple goal scorer for Port Adelaide was Brett Ebert on two.
There were match winners all over the ground for Adelaide including Mark Ricciuto, who finished with 18 kicks and 18 handballs, while Andrew McLeod was back to his best with 26 disposals in what was his 200th game. Matthew Clarke was dominant in the ruck with 31 hitouts, while Wayne Carey looked the Carey of old, storming up the ground for his 17 disposals, 6 marks and 3 goals.
Warren Tredrea was a standout for Port kicking 7 of their 13 goals, while Peter Burgoyne worked hard all night and finished with 26 disposals.
