I can’t think of too many workplaces where you are given 3 - 4 years (5 - 6 for some ruckman & key position players) to show that you can add any value to your employer. In most work environments I have been a part of if after 6 - 12 months you are not peforming to a required standard you are managed out. Why then should football be any different? Or is it simply the fact that the bar is set so low?
Players such as Swift, Schofield, Ebert, McKenzie (or however you spell it), Masten, Rosa, Wilkes, McKinley, Brown, Notte & Spangher have been on our list for several years and none have showed anything that would suggest they are going to be take this club further. This is not an attack on the young blokes either because there are also several “senior” players who should also be moved on (Jones, Hansen & Nicoski) because they too are not adding any value.
I’m not saying that AFL clubs only give young blokes 1 year to prove themselves but surely hard decisions need to made very quickly in order for a club such as West Coast to improve. Anyone remember Travis Gaspar & Andrew McDougall? Those two should be wearing a mask!
