Poor 300 crowd

The Sunday Times has reported a crowd of 300 at the Peel v Subiaco game.
If this is true account, then Iam afraid that WAFL in the Peel district has no future.

If you take away both team players WAGS and parents, that does not leave many independent supporters at the game.

Supporters are the heart and soul of any football club.  Previous Peel’s home crowd attendance clearly shows that Mandurah have not accepted this club.

Some may used the excuse that the bad weather and conflicting West Coast game may be a reason for the poor numbers, but they are the conditions that all the WAFL club face and combat.

Also I wish to express my opinion that the Sunday Times WAFL summary is a disgrace.

I think there was more than 300 there...maybe 302…

What is a concern is the second tier of footy in this state is “ not watched”. It does get some media attention, yet im sure more people watch the ammos or dare i say soccer matches, it IS a concern which has been evident for 10 plus years. It might have to be “radical”, but it needs a new life, to appeal to people.

The attendances this year have actually fallen away quite badly from what looked lke a mini comeback by the WAFL in 2009, Ive noticed a decline in all clubs, I guess with Claremont being the resurgent club , a club that has basically a microscopic supporter base that is to be expected. But across the board its been pretty poor in 2010.

As a comp i love the WAFL, although i admit to not going as often as i should. However, despite how much its talked about, the WAFL needs to have some major changes (look i dont really like what the AFL has done)...BUT at least it has been pro active. Apart from Peel joining and a few country games here and there, its basically the same comp as it was 20 years ago, with little if ANY growth in the crowds.

That’s got to be a Misprint, even allowing for Yesterday’s Dreary but not Appallingly Bad weather.Mind you,it gets even more Blowy down at Rushton(almost a different world down there, even in Summer),so I could hardly blame folk for not going to this WIND SWEPT Venue.

How many SUBI supportrs went, just out of interest? Not many I bet, apart from the Usual Diehards, with BEN and CHARLIE leading the way in TRUE SUPPORT.That being, they STILL SUPPORT their COLTS and RESSIES despite the DISASTROUS Seasons those 2 teams are having.

Unka, what do you suggest?Could have had it Sunday this week, but guess what?Peel have their own COUNTRY Side in the COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Grand Final.Which begs the question of THUNDER.Do they want Representation in the STATE LEAGUE or Country week?

I agree, It really is time for a major re think the comp is simply ailing to capture an public imgination at all. We need to have a good look at the SANFL - time and time again on ABC half time SANFL updates the crowds are healthy.

One good way to do it is to SPARE $270 000 and PROMOTE our Comp PROPERLY.That’s what’s GT to change. The Commission can say it promtes the WAFL All it wants.

Putting up a list of Fixtures at the AFL Game and in the paper does NOT amount to PROPER Promotion for CHRIST’S SAKE.Get some footage and with the ABC’s Permission,CROSS PROMOTE tem and US by showing the Best we can offer on PRIME TIME TV.Surely something like that is worth the expense as opposed to presiding over the DISASTER that took place recently?

If the COMMISSION reckons that money was worth the effort ofgoing NORTH,Fine.O one proviso. You got the money to Justify that, dig out some more from CONSOLIATED REVENUE you’ve mounted up from WEST COAST and FREO and PROMOTE the WAFL PROPERLY.

Give the WA PUBLIC BETTER EXPOSURE to it’s Own STATE COMPETITION!

The West on a Monday usually have accurate crowd figures, forget the Sunday times. You cant expect many to go and watch Peel especially in shit weather.
I thought the crowd at Lathlain was really good considering the appalling weather forecasts.
I think the resurgence is continuing from last year, although i dont know the figures. I can only go on Swans games and occassionally WP and we pull the best crowds weekly along with Perth.
If Perth can climb the ladder one day i reckon they might blow everyone else away because they really stick by them through thick and thin, and even though we lost it was nice to see their fans having a cheer and a laugh after a win.

What major changes do you suggest?, we have already had WP go to Joondalup, EP and Subi share Leederville. I think EF have a well overdue redevelopment of their ground in the pipeline (I stand corrected on this). Plus Perth and Swans put on a good day for the family at their respective grounds.

Grassy is on the money (pardon the pun), the WAFL do need put some more bucks into promotion on commercial radio and TV. Its great that 91.3, 107.3, and 990am do regular weekly coverage but unfortuanately that coverage is probably not getting out to ppl who many ppl (although 91.3 is growing in popularity in my group of friends), plus the radio reception is generally poor and had to get at all points in the metro area.
A station like 6PR who pay lip service to the WAFL perhaps need a finacial incentive or something to cover WAFL again. Also maybe 7two or a digital TV station could show regular old games from previous years like Foxtel did.
Perhaps it all starts in schools with the kids to identify with the WAFL club in their zone etc, but it all starts with money and the SANFL have more because they have always owned Footy Park.

Yes Charlie and Ben were both there, and I overheard Ben talking about you in the netball club Grassy.

Agree 100 % grassy 270k to attract 2000 people to dampier oval in that debacle was a DISGRACE, even cent counts in WAFL , I wonder if the SANFL would have done that , you have to be smart with yah quids and 270 would get you a decent start on some REAL promotion of the game.

mate the resurgance has not continued from last year the figures are miles down, did you see the EF V Cl game a top of the table clash , and it was like a training night, if you cant get consistent crowds to the feature games then thats a bad sign, I cant remember the last time a saw a good crowd at a WP game and as for Perth about 100 PFC people turned up to see Troy Cooks 200 league game at the Port this year. Sure SD get a few to home games , and the freo derbys still pull a few , but thats just not good enough across the board.
