Not sure is many on here would really care but below is a media realease from Perth Lynx. For those with an interest it is very big pick up for a struggling side. Bit like a Peel Thunder signing up a Johno Brown.

Perth Lynx Sign Tully Bevilaqua for the 2010/2011 WNBL Season

The Go for 2 and 5 Perth Lynx are excited to announce the signing of home-grown legend Tully Bevilaqua for their 2010/2011 Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) campaign.

In what is a truly massive coup for the club as well as the WA basketball community, Bevilaqua will join the team for what is set to be a promising season ahead.

Raised in the wheatbelt town of Merredin, Bevilaqua has spent the last 11 seasons based in the US, playing in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

A highly regarded professional basketballer, Bevilaqua is recognised as one of the world’s best defensive guards and her career achievements include being named five times to the WNBA All-Defensive Team, a five time recipient of the WNBL Defensive Player of the Year and was awarded the WNBL Good Hands Award three times.

Bevilaqua also took out the prestigious Kim Perrot Sportsmanship award in 2007, which is an annual WNBA award given to the player who most exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.

A current member of the Australian Opals Squad, Bevilaqua represented Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics which resulted in a silver medal win as well as gold medal wins at the 2006 FIBA World Championships and 2006 Commonwealth Games.

On being signed to the Perth Lynx Bevilaqua stated: “I am very excited to be heading back West. It is my goal to help raise the profile of the Perth Lynx in the community and be a leader both on and off the court for the younger players. Although I had already retired from the league, the opportunity to play once again in front of family and friends, where it all began for me, was too hard to resist.”

Her signing to the Perth Lynx serves as a major boost to the Go for 2 and 5 Perth Lynx program. On the signing, Head Coach David Herbert says: “Tully is an inspirational leader who will be a fantastic asset to the program.  She always leads by example and has a work ethic that is second to none.  We have a young group of players that will be learning how to work hard and lift their standards both on and off the court.  I could not have asked for a better player and person to show them the way.”

“Last year the team struggled at the defensive end.  Now we’re bringing in Tully, who is indisputably one of the world’s best defenders and will be an excellent role model for a young Perth Lynx roster.”

“The signing of Tully will no doubt send a message throughout the WNBL as well as the Perth basketball community that the Go for 2 and 5 Perth Lynx are serious about taking this program further.  My message to the WA basketball community is to jump on board this year as it will certainly be a season of change.”

Just saw it on the news TV...Great to see Tully back in the West.
Should be a huge asset for our team.
She might have a few tricks up her sleeve as well after playing in the USA.
Always nice to see these players come home after a bit of the big time.

I actually watched these girls play a few games years ago when the ABC had their games on after the WAFL game on Saturday.. Dont know if they still do.

They still televise games but because watching the Lynx was as bad as watching Peel play, they dont show too many of their games. I have seen the squad and it is a very talented group of State League players but i think another national player or even international player would be needed to be a top 4 side. The program they have set up to finalise the squad looks tough but it is a national league squad and it looks like the new coach, dont know much about him, has big ideas for this group and wants to take the team from the bottom to the top very quickly.

By herself, she should be a great COUP for the Lynx.

One small reservation.Am I right in seeing she hasn’t played for 2 years?Mightn’t make that much difference with a player of her quality anyhow.

But I think you can move the LNX games from PERRY LAKES now and even the new Court, straight to CHALLENGE.

The girls do have a website

http://www.wnbl.com.au/index.php?id=16

I must admit after reading the History it all came back to me.
Perth Breakers original name should of stuck
Lynx had me mystified.

I go back awhile but the only one I can remember was Michelle Timms
God that girl was incredible…

Where is she now???

I dont understand what Cheng is on about?? I think there is a competition on the Lynx website or maybe BasketballWA website to re name the Lynx. I also believe there is a strong possibility that they might be going back to the old Breakers. With Tully back and the old name back, not to mention the no nonsense approach of the new coach Herbet im confident the girls can string a few wins together this season. Just wish we still had Carly Wilson. Be handy player right about now.

Just had a look at the site I give above… Bad news is the comp finished on 15 June

Would of been interesting to see what names people came up with.
I liked the Breakers as it says it all.
Something identifying them with WA would most probably had been good.
Sandgropers (nah) Nuggets, Steelers (mining) Animals - Swans,Dingoes etc etc etc

Yeh I know pretty tame but they just came off the top of my head.

Anything would be better than Lynx

Hahahaha some good choice there but it is hard to come up with one isn’t it. I don’t mind the Steelers. I have seen the training schedule and it is tougher than any footy pre season i have done. I actually like the the Perth Gulls. There is a college team in US called Gulls and alot of sponsorship oppurtunity there too.
