The Flogged Dog - 03 July 2009 03:19 PM

Funny things happen when a promising kid graduates from junior footy to a senior club.  They’ve been told how good they are from an early age by all those important to them; mum and dad, nana and grandad, a succession of junior coaches, their mates, teachers etc.  Nobody with any REAL credentials in footy.  Some of these kids are very big fish in a very small junior council/school footy pond.
When they reach a WAFL club and have a revelation that suddenly there are lots of others just as good or better, it comes down to committment to improve that sorts the shit from the clay.  Some work out that they need to lift their efforts in all areas of their game to be selected over the next bloke.  Some don’t and all of a sudden find that someone WITH some credentials (often the senior coach) gives them an accurated assessment of their future at the club.  This might be that the kid is not good enough.
As a result of their upbringing this sort of information is difficult to swallow.  The kid gets the shits, goes elsewhere and bags the coach to anyone who’ll listen.
It’s been going on forever, but more so since footy became fully professional.  Now every loser with a bit of ability (endorsed by mum and dad) gives the teacher the bird and says “I don’t need school; I’m gonna play footy for a living”.  When the reality bites it’s much easier to blame someone else.
Amateurs and country footy is littered with thousands that would have played 150 AFL games if it wasn’t for coach X.

Right on the mark FD.

back to the topic. Rumour has it that Perth are in some serious trouble as there are two contracts floating around for certain players with differing amounts and signed by the appropriate powers. Will be interesting how the commission handle this. And the thing is this could of been avoided if they paid what they promised. But that is no surprise after all it is Perth Football Club.

It always makes me laugh when i read comments like ‘after all it is the Perth Football Club’ and the like. I would think its as simple as a guy has the s#@*^ with the club, says he was paid on the sly some money, an investigation shows there are some small contractural issues, and the matter will end with a small fine. Its easy to get onto these forums and say that a club is abhorent in their handling of affairs/ should come out and explain to their members how this has happened etc etc yet we all know that given the salary cap and how hard it is to match the wealthy clubs on and off the field, that payments outside the cap must be a certainty to take place

wasnt it reported in the west, a little bit different than footygoss

Not naming names lads. The player in question is currently playing in the bush.

Bloody hell, as Carry said, why is he playin’ in the bush? Why hasn’t he gone to another WAFL club to prove he’s good enough?

For years I hear bloody stories all the time from players who say this club n that club did ‘em wrong, yet in most cases they either weren’t good enough or weren’t prepared to do the hard yakka and stick it out.

And those stories don’t just come out of the PFC, I’ve heard the same cr*p about every other WAFL club.

As I said boys, not naming names. He was 21 & played a number of games (quite a few) in the seniors (getting in the best too). It aint rocket science to work out who it is.

He was let go, according to Jarmen b/c he didn’t fit into the youth policy, yet he was 21, a fact Jarmen was unaware of.

Only one I can think of in that category is Luke Nugent who I heard was playing in Kalgoorlie who would be 21 this year. He was injury prone, never really got fit but is a talent that should have been persevered with though I would imagine he decided to leave at the end of last season well b4 Jarman was appointed. I would have tried hard to keep him and get him fit but what would I know? Tall, Athletic, takes a good mark, good kick, just the type we let go! Of course some will say why hasn’t he gone to another WAFL club, he probably will next year if he gets himself fit. I wonder if our footy dept has kept in touch with him and kept tabs on his progress?

Exactly the type of plodder that holds this club back.
If our talent identifiers were better at there job these “try hards” wouldnt get past colts.

Won’t do any better than “bush” footy.
I dont give a stuff how old you are if you are not up to it move on.

Trust me,the games i have seen this year whoever it is won’t be missed.

Not the issue Scarr. I’m not questioning the recruiters. What I’m questioning is what is going down there.

Player X walks into the coaches office, Coach Y says b/c of a Youth Policy, Player X is cut. Player X asks what age the youth policy cuts off, 22 Coach Y says. Player X, I’m 21. Coach Y, I didn’t know that.

Surely you think Jarmen would do some research on the Player (that is finding what age he is)?

If we want to question the recruiting, this is the same club that told Marc Webb he was finished as a WAFL player. I even have it on good authority, that last year, Jarmen was tipped off about a player who played under his brother Darren in S.A (again not naming names, he had a nickname of the Wizard). Talyor Walker cross Tony Modra. Jarmen doubted he would lose weight to be an AFL player. Perth could have had him, but he is poised to make his debut in the AFL this w/e (his nickname is the Wizard, once revealed, another quality player Perth passed up on).

Firstly Marc Webb spat the dummy under Magro because he didnt like being dropped.
Wasnt a team man.Of course he went onto bigger and better things but it still doesnt hide the fact that Webb spat it.He wanted out,the club didnt get rid of him.

Secondly how the hell was Perth going to recruit a player that is playing AFL this weekend???????
Please don’t tell me you are talking of the reverse wafl draft.

From what I’ve been reading Magic, they’ve been working with us through the Details, without Resorting to the HEADLINE LANGUAGE that SCREAMED at us(On Reflection)and threatening us with a BIG STICK.

If we are in the Wrong,it was through HUMAN ERROR rather than SERIOUS RORTING and perhaps a Fine may be warranted. But nothing of the Proportion being BABDIED ABOUT.I believe the Club wouldn’t resort to BLATANT CHEATING in that it believes in FAIR PLAY,but it does make Mistakes.

Remember, the Biggest accusation Levelled at us is that we are TOO NICE.
